A Quiz About Music

Hello, again. Welcome back to the blog. Today I want to go through a quiz and give you some example answers. Quizzes are something I use a lot in my classes, and I find them to be a great way to get people talking right away. 

Quizzes force you into conversation mode, and this is, after all, what we are aiming for when we learn languages. 

Of course, it is super practical to do this process with a teacher, as he/she can give feedback and translate anything you don’t know how to say, but you can also challenge yourself, practise your conversational skills, and find holes in your language. 

On the flip side, you can use questions to your advantage to keep a conversation rolling. If you can ask good quality questions, you can tempt the other person to continue talking and in thus continue a good conversation. 

Okay, let’s get into the quiz.

What kind of music do you like?

I like all kinds of music. I am a musician, so it depends on my mood, but I really like rock, pop, and reggaeton. 

What do you like about this/these styles of music?

I grew up listening to rock music, so this is in my roots. I love the energy and emotion of rock music. 
Pop and pop-rock music are also full of emotions
Then I like reggaeton because there’s always a cool beat that gets you dancing. 

In what format do you listen to music?

Right now, I am streaming on Spotify, and in general, I use YouTube a lot. 

What format did we use in the olden days?

Well, I don’t know if it counts as olden days, but when I was a teenager I collected CD’s, and before that, I used cassette tapes. 

How did people listen to music before they used CD’s?

Hmm… People generally went to concerts but also listened to vinyl records. 

Do people still listen to vinyl records?

I think there was a period where people stopped listening to them, but they have become popular again over the past few years. Now you can buy them in most music stores. 

When do you typically listen to music?

Hmm… It varies: when I’m working, when I’m in the gym, when I’m at a party or wedding, or when I’m playing music myself.  

Do you play instruments?

Yeah, I play guitar and sing, but also drums and keyboards. 

How long have you been playing?

Between ten and fifteen years. 

What kind of music is best for dancing?

I think pop music, RnB, and Latin music. 

Can people dance to all types of music?

Yes, I think so. As long as there is a clear rhythm, and beat then you can dance.

How does the style of music change the way we dance?

Well, we follow the rhythm of the music, so if the music is fast and energetic, we also move in that way. If the song is slow and more sensual, we will move in a completely different way. 

Can music be objectively good or bad?

Hmm… that’s a tricky one. In general, we always listen to music with “subjective ears.” 

What do you mean?

I mean, if I say a style of music or song is bad, it is only my subjective opinion. The music may actually be good, technically speaking. 

Okay, so is it ever objective to say music is bad?

I think if the musicians aren’t good on their instruments, then yes. For example, if the drummer cannot stay in time or keep the beat, then maybe we could say, objectively, that the music is bad.
