Even though English (in the way we speak it today) has only existed for around 300 years, the <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=roots\">roots<\/a> of most words can be <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=trace%20back\">traced back<\/a> for thousands of years. English, as well as most European and some Asian languages, are all from the Indo-European language family, that probably began in West Asia about 5000 years ago.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 However, some words are not very old. Below are some interesting stories about where some relatively new English words originated from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-543 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/port-out-starboard-home.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/port-out-starboard-home.jpg 520w, https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/port-out-starboard-home-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Posh<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Especially in British English, <i>posh<\/i> describes a person or thing that is considered to be upper-class. Apparently, this word began as an <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=acronym\">acronym<\/a>. On boats travelling from England to India and back, the most expensive return tickets sold a <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=cabin\">cabin<\/a> in the left side of the boat (<i>Port) <\/i>while <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=leave\">leaving<\/a> England, and a cabin on the right side of the boat (<i>Starboard) <\/i>when leaving India. On the ticket, the acronym for <i>Port Out Starboard Home<\/i> was printed in capital letters: POSH.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\"><em>&#8220;You want to go to the Carlton for lunch? But its so posh! It probably costs a fortune!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Blockbuster<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 When I was growing up, <i>blockbuster<\/i> was the name of the local video-rental shop. However, the reason that the rental <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chain_store\">chain<\/a> used this name, was because in American English, a <i>blockbuster<\/i> is a very successful film. The term came from a film being so popular that the <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=queue\">queue<\/a> to enter the cinema extended <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=further\">further<\/a> than the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_block\">block<\/a><\/span> the cinema was in!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #b22222;\"><em>&#8220;Every film Tarantino makes is a blockbuster!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Carrefour<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Hang on \u2026 is this a French lesson within an English article? This popular international supermarket opened its first shop in France in 1960. It was situated on a place where two roads met &#8211; a crossroad, which is exactly what <i>carrefour<\/i> means; crossroad (<i>UK)<\/i> or intersection <i>(US<\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\">&#8220;Le magazin est au carrefour&#8221;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #b22222;\">(The shop is at the crossroad)<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-542-3\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Blogpost-AudioTrimmer.com-2-1.mp3?_=3\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Blogpost-AudioTrimmer.com-2-1.mp3\">https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Blogpost-AudioTrimmer.com-2-1.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Toilet<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Today, <i>toilet<\/i> is the most common word for the thing you sit on to excrete things from your body. It is also very commonly used, especially in the UK, for the room in which this special seat exists. This word actually originally began as a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Euphemism\"><i>euphemism<\/i><\/a><\/span><i>. <\/i>The French word <i>toilette<\/i> was originally used in English as a verb to mean what people (particularly women) did for personal hygiene and appearance. Toilet was then used for the place or room where people <i>did<\/i> their \u2018toilet\u2019. As these rooms began to have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tap_water\">running <\/a><\/span>water, the perfect euphemism came into existence of \u2018<i>going to the toilet<\/i>\u2019, which sounded nicer to posh Victorian ears than \u2018<i>going for a poo<\/i>\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em><span style=\"color: #b22222;\">18th century: The ladies went to the water closet to do their toilet.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #29abe2;\">21st century: The ladies went to the ladies&#8217; toilets to put on their make-up.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Checkmate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">I am terrible at chess, so I have never used this word properly; the word that is said upon winning a game. Chess originated in India or Persia (Iran) over a thousand years ago. Supposedly, at the end of the game, people declared that the king (<i>shah)<\/i> was dead (<i>mat). <\/i>Over time this call of &#8216;<em>shahmat&#8217;<\/em> slowly changed into today\u2019s <i>checkmat<\/i><i>e<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em><span style=\"color: #b22222;\">(Upon seeing that you can take the King in chess:) <\/span><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\">Checkmate<\/span>!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Mortgage<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=mortgage\">mortgage<\/a><\/span> is a <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=loan\">loan<\/a> connected to property. Mortgages usually only end when either the <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=borrower\">borrower<\/a> successfully <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/translation.asp?tranword=pay%20off\">pays off<\/a> their loan, which may take decades, or, when a person is unable to continue paying their loan (often, because they are dead). In the middle ages, when the first mortgages were written, the length of the contract was emphasised in its depressing name: the death (mort) contract (gage).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\"><em>I just bought a house!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #b22222;\"><em>Oh congratulations!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\"><em>Thanks, but, I will probably be paying the mortgage for the rest of my life.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Sandwich<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The last of these interesting and useless stories is about one of the most common items of food in the world. Supposedly, the Earl of Sandwich, an English Lord in the 18th century, liked to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gambling\">gamble<\/a><\/span>.He was so busy using his hands to play cards that when he got hungry he asked his servents to put his food between two pieces of bread so that he wouldn&#8217;t have to put his cards down. His friends began to copy him, saying &#8220;I&#8217;ll have the same as Sandwich&#8221; and, eventually, &#8220;I&#8217;ll have a Sandwich&#8221;.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #b22222;\">Joke alert:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #29abe2;\">A sandwich walks into a bar. The barman says &#8220;Get out!
