Not only to be understood in the supermarket, but also have the ability to contribute to a conversation, express your opinion, and ask questions, thus keeping a conversation flowing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #b22222;\">This can, however, prove to be the biggest obstacle for many learners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We can learn grammar rules, and short phrases, but how can we practice conversations, if we just don\u2019t have the vocabulary or understanding?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there isn\u2019t really any other way to practice without actually having a conversation, without speaking the words and sensing how you feel when the words start to flow. Do you get stuck?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/communication_title.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"2289\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/communication_title.png\" data-link=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/?attachment_id=2289\" class=\"wp-image-2289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/communication_title.png 800w, https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/communication_title-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/communication_title-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3><b>Where are your holes?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #b22222;\">This is a great way to find holes in your knowledge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because in conversations you will come across words you don\u2019t yet know, or simply cannot remember, and this will push you to learn.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, it can be intimidating when speaking with other people if your mind goes blank and you just don\u2019t know what to say, or you\u2019re missing a word. The key is not to panic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <span style=\"color: #b22222;\">Here are a few simple tips and tricks for improving your conversational language<\/span>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3><b>Reword your sentence.&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are always several ways to say the same thing, so if you find yourself half way through a sentence, and you realize you\u2019re missing some vocabulary, the solution could be to reword your sentence. Stop for a moment, nobody is going to rush you, can you find another way to say the same thing? Surely, you can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, maybe you want to say, \u201cI\u2019m innocent in all this,\u201d but you cannot remember the word \u201cinnocent.\u201d Well, then you might instead say, \u201cI haven\u2019t done anything wrong,\u201d or, \u201cIt&#8217;s not my fault.\u201d This is a kind of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #b22222;\">paraphrasing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and we\u2019ll come back to this in another post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3><b>Ask for help<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m quite a proud person who doesn&#8217;t really like to ask for help or show others that I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m talking about. Sound like you? I hear you. This insecurity is amplified when speaking a foreign language. But, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #b22222;\">remember this, when natives speak to each they also forget what things are called<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They also have to stop and ask, \u201cAhh, what is that thing called?&#8230; You know, that thing you use to open wine bottles?\u201d To which the second person will reply, \u201ca corkscrew?\u201d BINGO!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #b22222;\">It\u2019s actually a very natural part of conversations because we don\u2019t have perfect memories<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sometimes we go blank. So, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #b22222;\">another method when you forget a word or find you\u2019re missing a word, is to describe the object, situation, or whatever it may be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and this will subsequently make your conversations flow in a natural way.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3><b>Quiz yourself<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I find quizzes to be one of the best ways to practice conversational language, and this is a method I use in my classes, even with complete beginners, because it immediately gets us talking and thinking about natural conversations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By quizzes, I don\u2019t mean general knowledge questions, like \u201cWho wrote the fairy tale, \u2018The Little Mermaid?\u2019\u201d, but rather open questions that give you the chance to express your opinion and talk about a range of topics such as music, love, movies, Christmas, sex, politics, etc.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is something you can do alone because when you have a set of questions, you can practice answering them. First, try to speak. Say as much as you can to answer the topic. Then write your answers. This also gives you an opportunity to check grammar and will likely inspire you to find more answers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we are now in December, here\u2019s an example quiz you can use.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b>Christmas Quiz<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you in the Christmas spirit yet? <br><\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Do you like Christmas?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you know anyone who doesn\u2019t like Christmas?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are people friendlier <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #00ccff;\">on the run-up to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Christmas\/in December?<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are people happy in December?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How important is Christmas for you?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you religious if you celebrate Christmas?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did you celebrate Christmas when you were a child?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you celebrate Christmas this year?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you want for Christmas?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you still believe in Santa Claus?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would you do if you were Santa Claus?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would you rather be Santa Claus or Rudolf? -Why?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has Christmas become too commercial?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much do you spend on Christmas gifts?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do kids love snow so much?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there anything negative about snow?&nbsp;<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the best thing about Christmas?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was a nice long list of questions to get your Christmas juices flowing, and if you weren&#8217;t already in the Christmas spirit, I hope you are now.
