But don\u2019t worry, because that\u2019s why we\u2019re here, and today I\u2019m going to give you a shortlist of some of the most common mistakes in English.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s get into it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first one is:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Live AND live&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What\u2019s the difference? One is a verb and one is an adjective.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #29abe2\">Verb: To live [\u02c8l\u026av]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I would like to live in New York someday.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Me gustar\u00eda vivir en Nueva York alg\u00fan d\u00eda)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #29abe2\">Adjective: Live [\u02c8la\u026av]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>He\u2019s never heard live music before.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Nunca antes hab\u00eda escuchado m\u00fasica en vivo)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s take the next one:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Affect AND effect&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #29abe2\">The first one is a verb: To affect [\u0259\u02c8f\u025bkt]<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>He was deeply affected by what you said.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Estaba profundamente afectado por lo que dijiste)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #29abe2\">Whereas the second is a noun: An effect [\u026a\u02c8f\u025bkt]&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Your words had a positive effect on me.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Tus palabras tuvieron un efecto positivo en m\u00ed)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can hear that these two words are very close in terms of pronunciation, and when speaking quickly, you&#8217;re probably not going to have any problems at all. You don&#8217;t need to think about it too much: they basically sound the same.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But&#8230; if we slow it down, there is a slight difference. Here it is one more time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Affect&#8230; Effect&#8230;&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>Less AND Fewer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here you can follow a super simple rule.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #29abe2\">Less [\u02c8l\u025bs] = uncountable \/ nouns in singular form<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The man has less time today.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(El hombre tiene menos tiempo hoy)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Here we&#8217;re talking about time, and in English we think about time as being one thing- a singular noun.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #29abe2\">Fewer [\u02c8fju\u02d0\u0259<sup>r<\/sup>] = countable \/ nouns in plural form<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The woman has fewer friends than me.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(La mujer tiene menos amigos que yo)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This time we&#8217;re talking about &#8220;friends&#8221; so we&#8217;re using &#8220;fewer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Another OR Other<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was asked about this one recently and found I really had to think hard to figure out the difference. Here\u2019s what I concluded.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #29abe2\">Another [\u0259\u02c8n\u028c\u00f0\u0259<sup>r<\/sup>] = One more of, and belongs to singular nouns.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Can I get another drink?&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(\u00bfPuedo tomar otro trago?, \u00bfPodr\u00e1 traerme otro trago?, \u00bfPuedo pedirle otro trago?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I have another brother who lives in New York.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Tengo otro hermano que vive en Nueva York)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #29abe2\">Other [\u02c8\u028c\u00f0\u0259<sup>r<\/sup>] = A different one and belongs to both singular and plural nouns<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;ve just spoken with my other sister.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Acabo de hablar con mi otra hermana)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Can I try on the other shoes?&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(\u00bfPuedo probarme los otros zapatos?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who AND That<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is another commonly confused one but possibly one of the easiest rules to follow.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29abe2\"><strong>Who [\u02c8hu\u02d0] = people (think: <em>who<\/em> is&#8230;?)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I know a man who looks like you.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Conozco a un hombre que se parece a ti)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29abe2\"><strong>That [\u00f0\u0259t] = objects (Think: <em>that<\/em> is\u2026)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I have a computer that keeps turning itself off.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Tengo una computadora que sigue ap\u00e1ngandose sola)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally, I want to give an example of two words that are spelt the same but pronounced differently.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><b>Read AND Read<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both of these words are verbs, well, the same verb in two tenses.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of course, we have:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29abe2\"><strong>To read [\u02c8ri\u02d0d] &#8211; infinitive<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019m going to read a book.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Voy a leer un libro)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AND<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #29abe2\">Read &#8211; past tense.&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you read your new book?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(\u00bfHas le\u00eddo tu nuevo libro?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Okay, that was it for today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check back next week for more common mistakes, and if there are any words confusing you that you\u2019d like to see in an article like this one, drop a comment below.
