Why do we say <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">that we use an &#8216;<em>electric oven<\/em>&#8216;, but power comes from an &#8216;<em>electrical power station<\/em>&#8216;? Why do we say that London is in the &#8216;South&#8217; of England, but it is also correct to say that London is in &#8216;Southern England&#8217;? This is particularly common for objects that a non-electric version exists, like ovens, irons, cars or toothbrushes;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>In my house we don\u2019t have a gas cooker. We cook on an electric stove.<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\"><em>Electrical<\/em> <\/span>means \u2018related to electricity\u2019;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>Before the house can be rented, some electrical tests must be done.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\"><em>Electronic <\/em><\/span>usually refers to smaller devices that use microchips, such as phones, calculators and other hand-held objects. It\u2019s secondary meaning is for virtual things that traditionally existed in the real world, like <em>shops<\/em>, <em>books,<\/em> and the most common of all \u2013 <em>e-mail. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>I prefer to use an electronic dictionary because it isn\u2019t as heavy as a paper dictionary. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>Sorry, Sir, we don\u2019t have that book in stock today, but you can buy the e-book from our e-shop.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Be aware that there are some situations in which <span style=\"color: #29abe2;\"><em>electric<\/em> <\/span>and <span style=\"color: #29abe2;\"><em>electrical<\/em> <\/span>can both be used. For example;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>The electric(al) circuit was damaged, and the lights went out.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1079-5\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/electric4.mp3?_=5\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/electric4.mp3\">https:\/\/en-ingles.com.ar\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/electric4.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">North \/ Northern, South \/ Southern, East \/ Eastern, West \/ Western<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The simple form &#8211; <em><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\">north<\/span> &#8211;\u00a0 <\/em>is a noun, adjective and adverb;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">As a noun: <em>Resistencia is in the North of Argentina<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">As an adjective: <em>It is always hot in South Thailand<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">As an adverb: <em>When I was travelling East, I met a lot of interesting people.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The &#8216;different&#8217; form &#8211; <em><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\">northern<\/span> &#8211;<\/em> is <strong>always an adjective<\/strong>, and is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">synonym<\/span> of <em>north<\/em> when it is used as an adjective:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em> It is always hot in Southern Thailand.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29abe2;\">NOTE: There are some place names in which you cannot choose which form to use &#8211; because they are names! This includes Northern Ireland, North Korea and South America.
